The colonel said he would be happy to see them, and Aunt Effie’s staff packed a generous wicker basket full of food and cold bottles of beer for their lunch. With Bertie safely seated in the back of Kitty’s car and their picnic strapped to the boot, they set off for the Hall.

Kitty parked her car in the shade next to Jamie’s shiny dark-green sports car and she, Matt and Bertie rang the bell at the side door they had used previously. A uniformed maid appeared and took them down the corridor to the colonel’s study where they had met him the previous day.

The colonel was seated behind his desk studying a document. He rose as they entered and covered whatever he was reading discreetly with a blank sheet of paper before shaking their hands.

‘Good morning, Captain Bryant, Mrs Bryant, have a seat.’ He waved towards the empty chairs in front of his desk. ‘What news? Has the inspector made an arrest yet?’

‘I don’t believe he has made any arrest just yet. However, we think he has some new lines of enquiry that he may be following up,’ Matt replied cautiously as he took a seat next to Kitty.

‘Oh?’ The colonel looked expectantly in their direction.

‘We wanted to see you this morning, sir, to update you on our progress. Our own investigation has unearthed a few more questions and Inspector Woolley may also be in touch with you to clarify a few points,’ Matt said.

Kitty saw a wary expression flit across the colonel’s craggy face. ‘Well, anything I can do to help. What do you need to know?’

‘We visited Big Top Circus over at Barnsover yesterday. We spoke to Jimmi, the elephant keeper.’

Kitty watched the colonel’s face as Matt explained. The colonel remained impassive, but Kitty could see the wariness was still in his eyes.

‘I don’t follow you? Is he a suspect in Miss Crowther’s death?’ the colonel asked.

‘We went to ask him if he had noticed anyone arriving on the field from the direction of the gardeners’ shed or if he saw anyone entering the fortune telling booth after Miss Crowther closed for her tea break. He had a unique position on the field to observe both places,’ Kitty said.

‘Oh right, yes, I suppose he would from the copse, it’s the highest point on the field.’ Colonel Brothers appeared to relax slightly, his shoulders dropping.

‘You told us that you entered Miss Crowther’s booth to check that the money in the float had been corrected?’ Kitty wanted to clarify the statement the colonel had made previously.

‘Yes, that’s right.’ Colonel Brothers shifted his weight in his seat.

‘Do you recall when you entered the fortune telling tent, sir?’ Matt asked. The colonel had told them that he had visited at the start of the afternoon, but Jimmi had said it was later, when Miss Crowther was taking her break, which would put him in the frame for her murder.

‘I, erm, well, I…’ The colonel seemed to sense that they had picked up on the discrepancy in his statement.
